Community Effort Leads to Recovery of Stolen Bike

on 12 February 2025

Alarm Activation

This morning, a house alarm in Newlands Avenue went off when a driveway beam was activated by a thief stealing a child's bicycle. The homeowner quickly took action by posting the crime on our CID Emergency group with a picture from her CCTV camera and a brief description of the suspect.

Neighbourhood Response

After the post, the community sprang into action. Friends, strangers, Newlands CID, and Groote Schuur CID all came together to support the homeowner. CID security officers were dispatched to the scene, and a friend provided a more detailed description of the suspect. The search team, including concerned residents, set off to track down the suspect along common escape routes for burglars.

Suspect Pursuit

Thanks to the detailed description, a CID officer and a resident spotted a possible suspect moving along the M3 towards town. The search team, with the help of a resident from Avenue Road, pursued the suspect to Mowbray where the stolen bike was recovered. Despite a chase, the suspect managed to escape via the railway line.

Community Strength

Although a burglary is a terrible experience, the incident showcased the power of community collaboration. The alarm system worked effectively, the homeowner acted swiftly, and the community rallied together to support each other.
