Crime Update: Community Patrollers Thwart Cable Theft in the Early Hours

on 15 August 2024

Caught in the Act

Cable theft is a persistent problem in Cape Town, and unfortunately our community is not immune. A few months ago, the Vineyard and Hiddingh areas experienced several incidents of cable theft, which were successfully curbed by the vigilance of the Claremont neighborhood security.

However, in the past few weeks, the problem has resurfaced. The typical scenario in our area involves a man climbing up and cutting the cable between two poles, which we have seen on video a few times.

Recent Incident

Around 2:00 AM last night (15 August 2024), a community patroller spotted three men stealing cable on Protea Road. They tried to run away, but he managed to detain one of them. The suspect was promptly handed over to the South African Police Service (SAPS), who quickly responded to the request for a formal arrest. Now, it's up to the City to open a case so that the suspect can be charged.

Working Together

By continuing to deploy resources and building strong partnerships with our neighbors and law enforcement, we can fight back against cable theft.

A really great effort from the Community patrol team in keeping our community safe!
